HORMONAL CONTRACEPTIVE
The most effective way would be to develop a drug which prevented the sperms from being formed. Unfortunately, the problem is far more complex than that which led to the development of the hormonal contraceptive pill used by women. A woman produces only one ovum in each menstrual cycle, and ovulation can be suppressed fairly easily, using hormones. In contrast, a man ejaculates several hundred million spermatozoa each time he has an orgasm, and these spermatozoa are eighty days old when they are ejaculated. This means that a male contraceptive pill has to stop all sperm formation and it would not be effective until all the sperms already formed had been ejaculated.
Currently several drugs are under investigation to achieve this objective. The first of these is to use a long-acting, powerful gestagen (a synthetic form of the female sex hormone, progesterone). This hormone effectively prevents spermatozoa from being formed, but usually reduces the man’s libido to an unacceptably low level. In order to overcome this problem, the gestagen, medroxyprogesterone acetate, is being given together with injections of a long-acting testosterone. The clinical trials with this combination suggest that the drugs effectively suppress sperm formation, without any loss of libido, but a good deal of work is needed before the combination will be generally available, and even then the combination may be unacceptable to most men because of the need for injections every 10 to 14 days.

MIDDLE AGE PROBLEMS – DIET
A diet sheet alone will not enable you to lose weight. You have to be motivated to keep to the diet. Your motivation will be helped if you accept the following propositions:
- The only person who can beat your obesity is you! But you can be encouraged in your determination to lose weight if you are helped by advice from a nutritionist, your doctor, or one of the organizations like Weight Watchers International.
- You have to keep to your chosen diet and not cheat, so that you eat less energy than you use up.
- There is no quick way to lose weight permanently. Permanent weight loss is a slow process. Although with some so-called miracle diets you can lose a lot of weight quickly, you put it on just as quickly. ‘Crash diets’ may be dangerous.
- Don’t gorge, eating only one large meal a day – eat the same amount of food in several small meals, and try to eat each meal at the same time each day.
- Before you start eating decide what you are going to put on your plate and don’t add more. And eat your meal slowly.
- Try and take some exercise most days – provided you enjoy exercising! It need not be dull exercise, you can swim, walk briskly garden actively, or even play golf, as long as you play energetically. Spend at least half an hour taking exercise. This will help you lose weight and will make you feel fitter.

RELIGION AND HOMOSEXUALITY
There is nothing in the Bible which indicates that homosexuality, as such, is to be condemned as evil. The references, in context, imply that those condemned are heterosexuals who turn to homosexuality for ritual reasons or for novelty, not those who have always been homosexual.
However, Christian teaching over the centuries has emphasized the evil, unnatural aspect of homosexuality and has encouraged, by this, the belief that homosexuality is a sin. This has induced people to react to homosexuality and to homosexuals with fear and disgust.
Some psychiatrists suggest that those who demand the harshest penalties for homosexuals and who most fear homosexuality are themselves repressing their own homosexual tendencies. These are the men who are authoritarian and usually conservative. In early life they have identified strongly with a strict father and most of their attitudes derive from him. They uphold class distinctions and traditions; they believe in toughness and discipline in education;
they pronounce on the sanctity of family life (although their covert behaviour often belies their pronouncements); they deplore the sexual permissiveness and the disrespect of youth, and they abhor homosexuality.

TYPES OF IMPOTENCE – ALCOHOL
When they get home he pours a beer for himself while his wife puts the car in the garage. She has been somewhat terse in the car, for Tom’s ‘top form’ has irritated her and she has been embarrassed by it. While Tom is drinking his beer she goes to bed.
After a while Tom follows, still alcoholically intent on proving his virility. A sleepy wife sleepily submits to Tom’s advances, and nothing happens. Tom fails to get an erection.
He does not talk about it with his wife, but decides he will prove to her that their marriage is in spendid order and that he is a great lover. First, he buys her some flowers, and then decides that perhaps it might be a good idea to have a couple of drinks before he goes home and perhaps a bottle of wine with dinner. The evening is a success. His wife is pleased with the flowers, has forgiven her husband, and is sexually stimulated by him, so that she is keen to have sex when they get to bed.

SEXUAL PROBLEMS – MYTHS AND MISCONCEPTIONS
Such re-education demands that both partners must be able to discard all the myths and misconceptions accumulated during their lives. They must discard the view that sex is sinful, and reject the double standard of human sexuality. They must learn about each other’s sexual anatomy and physiology. This knowledge is not only important in itself, but it helps the sexual partners to talk to each other without embarrassment, so that they may achieve a change in their attitudes towards sex. In the various centres which have been established to treat sexual problems the extent of the couple’s sexual information, or misinformation, is obtained by the therapist who asks a series of questions.
While communication in words is important, it is equally important for the couple to learn to communicate without words. Re-education in sexual communication involves touching, smelling, and tasting as much as talking.
