MALE MENOPAUSE: THE SURVIVAL COURSE: THE PHYSICAL FOUNDATION DRESSING SUCCESSFULLY: THE TEN COMMANDMENTS 5 (PART 2)
Be colourful
For most formal occasions — and interviews — nothing beats a white shirt and a subtly colourful silk tie, and most men can never go far wrong wearing a blue shirt either. But if this is too routine, look into the selections of shirts that are patterned and select those that have a clean-looking background. Avoid creams, beige, lilac and dove grey as they do nothing for the appearance and if they don’t make the face look drawn, haggard, ill or tired, make the man look as if he is trying too hard to keep up with fashion — and failing.
If you are unsure about whether a shirt colour suits you take it to a mirror, hold it up to your face. You would try on a jacket, a sweater and even a swimsuit so why not hold a shirt up to your face in front of a mirror? Judge for yourself.
As for sweaters, look for those that are maroon, dark green, navy, rust and all rich shades of blue, in plains or patterns, so that they can be worn stylishly with flannels or coloured cords. If you are partial to the brighter colours wear them as polo shirts, sports shirts or ties.
The final effect of this rich colouring highlighted by white or a limited amount of bright colours may seem unadventurous or, initially, traditional. But the colours are effective and make for simple elegance which, after forty, is what most of us need unless we are headed for the beach — which is another story.
Rich colours work; drab colours do not.
